What Is Spin Me the News?

The news mostly doesn't lie to you. It does something smarter. It picks which true things to tell you, puts the scary ones in the headline, and lets you do the lying to yourself.

Here's the deal. We take one big world story, line up how the left, the center and the right covered it, check the facts, and score everyone on how hard they spun it. Then we tell you what we think, with a big OPINION label on it. Cable news has opinions too. It just calls them "analysis" and puts a guy in a nice suit in front of them.

No team jerseys. No sacred cows. Just receipts. Check today's Spin Meter and see who needs to sit down. Here's the good news. The truth is usually in there somewhere. You just have to read all three versions and subtract the adjectives.

Today's Spin Meter

Reading all three versions…

How We Do It

No magic. Just three versions of the same story, a lot of coffee, and the trust issues you get from reading headlines for a living.

1

Grab the Same Story Three Ways

We pull one world story from left, center and right outlets, then put them next to each other. Same facts, three outlets, and somehow three different movies. Nobody's lying, exactly. They just each decided which part was the plot.

2

Fact-Check Everything

Every claim gets checked against at least two solid sources. "A guy on a podcast said" doesn't count. Neither does "sources say" when the sources won't say who they are. If it can't survive a second source, it doesn't make the page.

3

Score Each Side 1–10

Accuracy, sourcing and loaded language. No curve, no favorites. Use the word "slams" in a headline and you lose points, because nobody slammed anything. A senator posted something and went to lunch.

4

Give Our Opinion (Clearly Labeled)

Yes, we have opinions. We label them OPINION, so you never have to guess. If cable news did that, the label would be on screen for twenty-three hours a day.

5

Own Our Mistakes

When we blow it, we fix it and post it in Corrections where everyone can see. No quiet edits at 2 a.m. hoping nobody noticed. Everybody gets it wrong sometimes. The difference is whether you say so out loud.
